My Mother's House / “母亲的家”

Villa Le Lac Le Corbusier "柯布西耶--母亲之家" l It is a small house in Switzerland. It stands on the northern bank of Lac Léman. This small detached house, designed for Le Corbusier’s parents, was built in 1923-24 from plans drawn up by Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret.3 of the “5 points for a new architecture”: the use of the roof as a sun deck or garden , the open plan and the ribbon window. A “Purist” house, a “machine for living”, it marks a decisive stage and prefigures the Villa Savoye.

Charles Gwathmey's Modernist Masterpieces

Gwathmey Residence and Studio, 1965 by Charles Gwathmey l At the age of 27, Charles Gwathmey designed this groundbreaking residence in Amagansett, New York, for his parents, Rosalie, a photographer and textile artist, and Robert, a social realist painter. (A studio building followed.) The architect conceptualized the 1,200-square-foot house as a composition of geometric forms, cylinders interlocking with a central cube.

Row House (Azuma House) 住吉の長屋 Tadao Ando 安藤忠雄 | a small two-story, cast-in-place concrete house completed in 1976, is an early Ando work which began to show elements of his characteristic style. It consists of three equally sized rectangular volumes: two enclosed volumes of interior spaces separated by an open courtyard. By nature of the courtyard's position between the two interior volumes, it becomes an integral part of the house's circulation system.

My Father's House Louis Kahn's Margaret Esherick House (1961) l Although this house is not design for Kahn's family, Louis Kahn only did three major architectural homes in his career, and Esherick house was featured in Nathaniel Kahn's My Architect documentary about his father and family. The Esherick House on Chestnut Hill in Philadelphia is a small, one-person, two storey box of stucco and stained timber that sits on six acres of established garden.

Jerome and Carolyn Meier House by Richard Meier l Architect Richard Meier designed this Essex, New Jersey, house for his parents in 1965. Meier described it as "A Miesian brick house under a Frank Lloyd Wright roof." Meier was also quoted as saying: "My mother always said everything was perfect except for one thing—there weren't enough closets."

Casa Vanna Venturi Robert Venturi l The Mother’s House (1963) was Venturi's physical manifesto of "Complexity & Contradiction in Architecture". The Evolution of Vanna Venturi’s House in Chestnut Hill, Frederick Schwartz noted that if this house is a challenge to Modernist purism in architecture than it is instructive to compare it to Le Corbusier’s Villa Savoye. Mother’s House was based on an old and familiar prototype as compare to the Villa's "machine for living".

Rogers' House by Richard Rogers (1969) l The house commissioned by Rogers’ parents, sits within a long and narrow wooded urban plot, opposite Wimbledon Common. It is designed to provide maximum privacy and seclusion, and consists of two separate elements facing on to an internal garden courtyard. The small unit houses the separate flat and pottery studio and acts as a sound barrier between the house and the road. Rogers describes the house as ‘a transparent tube with solid boundary walls'.
