Plutarch: "While still a stripling, he served in the campaign at Potidaea, and had Socrates as a tent-mate and comrade in action. A firece battle took place, wherein both of them distinguished themselves; but when Alcibiades fell wounded, it was Socrates that stood over him and defended him, and with the most conspicuous bravery saved him, armour and all." Hoplon - Anicent Greek Shield - A large & heavy round shield about 1 mtr in diameter, weighing 7-10 kgs. Hoplon was vital in the famous Greek phalanx formation which created a massive shield wall to make frontal attacks difficult for the enemy. It was also used to carry the dead and wounded from the battlefield. Losing it was considered a disgrace which is why women told their husbands: ‘come back with your shield or on it’.
