The Monster of Gévaudan was a ferocious beast that killed more than one hundred women and children in south-central France between 1764 and 1770. Ninety eight of the victims killed were partially eaten. The goverment-sponsored hunt for the beast is the basis for the 2001 thriller movie 'Le Pacte des Loups' and descriptions of the beast directly inspired the 1975 erotic movie 'La Bête' directed by Walerian Borowczyk.
