ALBERTI: Sant Andrea, Mantua, begun 1472. Leon Batista Alberti had a new interest in Roman buildings aroused by studying Vitruvius. His interests in archaeology and architectural design were fused with his interests in math and engineering. He began undertaking architectural design with a heavy indebtedness to Brunelleschi. Ultimately, he became an important transitional figure between the early Florentine Renaissance and the Roman High Renaissance in the early 16th century.
