Cabaret Voltaire was a nightclub in Zurich, Switzerland, founded by Hugo Ball & Emmy Hennings on February 5, 1916 as a cabaret for artistic and political purposes. Other founding members were Marcel Janco, Richard Huelsenbeck, Tristan Tzara, and Jean Arp. Events at the cabaret proved pivotal in the founding of the anarchic art movement known as Dada. Sus primeras obras experimentales son los Rayogramas 1921, imágenes fotográficas sacadas sin cámara. Hace también retratos, de hecho se convierte en fotógrafo retratista de personalidades de la cultura.Cuando el surrealismo se separa del dadá en 1924, Ray es uno de sus fundadores y está incluido en la primera exposición surrealista en la galería Pierre de París en 1925. Realiza esculturas surrealistas siguiendo el modelo del arte encontrado creado por Marcel Duchamp de 1923.
