These early (1920) somewhat expressionist (or Vienna Secessionist?) etchings by Escher are a revelation.... The only work of his I really know are the enigmatic 'impossible objects' of the later style... Escher became immensely fashionable in the mid- or late-70s, I recall, I suppose in the years following his death in 1972. Strange, because I always think of him as an early 20th century artist who probably died before world war two.... Wrongly, obviously...
