When you decide to extend your time in Rome, and you should definitely do that, you will probably start looking for locations to check out that are close by, easy to travel to, have interesting sites and are convenient enough to allow you to return to your comfortable hotel room in time for a good night’s sleep. One recommendation I have is to check out the historical cities of Anzio and Nettuno.

Florence (Firenze) has it all. World class museums, amazing food and wine, cathedrals and even a city view that can’t be beat. Home to the House of the Medici, it is considered by many to have been the birthplace of the Renaissance and became a major artistic, cultural, commercial, political, economic and financial center. It is the biggest city in Tuscany and the dialect in Florence became the basis for standard Italian due to the influence of Dante, Petrarch, Boccaccio and Machiavelli.

A Day Trip From Rome - Naples is one of my favorite places in Italy. In addition to the beauty of the city itself, it is also a jumping off point for other attractions that are close by, like the Amalfi Coast, the ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum and the islands of Ischia, Procida and Capri. One day is definitely not long enough to enjoy these other neighboring sites because of the travel time, so you should check out the city, eat the best pizza in the World and plan your eventual return.

Palermo is Sicily's cultural, economic and tourism capital. It is a city rich in history, culture, art, music and food. People are attracted to the city not just for its climate, restaurants and architecture, but also its nightlife and music. Palermo is the main Sicilian industrial and commercial center, which includes tourism, commerce and agriculture. The city has an international airport, a significant underground economy and is now among the top tourist destinations in both Italy and Europe.
Agrigento is one of the oldest cities in Sicily, founded in 581 BC by Rhodesian and Cretan settlers, it was known as Akràgas. It was the second most important city of greater Greece (Magna Grecia) behind Syracuse on the east coast of Sicily. It has represented one of the most shining historical centers of the Mediterranean. This is why UNESCO granted the Archaeological Area of Agrigento the title of being a World Heritage Site in 1997.

Orvieto is a beautiful hilltop town in Umbria that has a rich Etruscan and Medieval history. If you are looking for a day-trip from Rome, you couldn’t pick a more enticing destination that is very convenient by train and small enough to experience in a single day, but with enough to see to make it well worth the trip. We visited Orvieto for a couple of days at a very relaxed pace and we wanted to share a couple of special places that we enjoyed.

For many years Venice has struggled with the difficult balance of tourism revenue and the quality of life for the residents in La Serenissima (The Most Serene). Certainly during the tourist season Venice is anything but serene. Over-tourism is an ongoing major problem that they continue to deal with. In the not so distant past, Venice was largely populated by Venetians and the visitors were more interested in art, culture and the unique environment that Venice offers.

Living in Rome has many benefits, which include Italian food, wine, culture and weather. In addition, it provides easy access to other places in Italy that are easy weekend getaways from Rome. We try to spend weekends away when our schedules and our finances permit this and earlier this year we took a long weekend trip to Genoa (Genova).
