Emperor Mauricius (r. A great soldier-emperor, who drove the Avars and Slavs out of the Empire. He also defeated the Persians and installed a client ruler there. However, he was murdered by traitors, and another war with Persia was provoked.
Manuel II Palaeologus (born in Constantinople on Jun. 27, 1350 - Jul. 21, 1425) important Eastern Roman emperor whose reign witnessed the collapse of vital diplomatic efforts in the West and the defeat of a crusade against the Ottomans. The empire had been reduced to the capital, Thessalonki, a few islands and much of the Peloponnese.
