Boris Pasternak (1890-1960) was a Russian poet and novelist whose epic Doctor Zhivago helped him win the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1958. Pasternak's novel was a controversial work in Russia and had to be smuggled out of the Soviet Union and published in Italy.In 1987 the Union of Soviet Writers posthumously reinstated Pasternak, giving him legitimacy in his home country.
