John Jonston was a Polish scholar born to a family of Scottish origin. One of Jonston’s works, Historia Naturalis (Natural History), was translated into many languages.

siryl:  Anonymous illustration for Serpentum et Draconum Historiae by Renaissance naturalist Ulysse Aldrovandi. The author was nearly executed for heresy when his study of fossils led him to openly reject the notion of a global flood as described in the Book of Genesis.  His belief that the world harbored many varieties of dragons was much less controversial.
