This is an old Chicago South Shore Railroad electric train that runs between South Bend, Indiana and Chicago - these cars were probably close to 100 years old when they were retired. We called riding these cars the "Vomit Comet".
This train uses its 'power lines' to give the trains power to run. It is a lot more efficient than steam engines because those are usually manually 'recharged' and require extra luggage (the charcoal powers the train and is placed near the front).
