"The Assumption of the Virgin" by Guido Reni | "This teaching does not mean that Mary, of her own power, ascended into Heaven. Only Jesus ascended into Heaven of His own power and authority. Rather, Mary, was taken up (assumed) body and soul into heaven by God. This was an honor and grace given to her. Therefore, we speak of Mary’s Assumption and not her Ascension."

I guess I have a weakness for these sort of over-the-top Russian icons. This one is by Viktor Vasnetsov (I adore most everything I’ve seen by him, actually). It’s called The Mother of God with the Infant Christ and it’s found in the apse of the Cathedral of St. Vladimir, Kiev. I found it in the wonderful book Russian Design and the Fine Arts, 1750-1917 by Evgenia Kirichenko.
