St. John of the Cross taught that the  means for the soul to attain the transforming union is by receiving the gift of contemplation. The soul must dispose itself for contemplation by mental prayer. When mental prayer is faithfully practiced, along with a life of consummate virtue, the soul will soon find itself receiving the gift of contemplation, which is unites divine love into the soul. In this mystical state, the soul is being transformed by God through the action of the Holy Spirit.
