James's caterpillar came out of it's cocoon today. It was one of these - the salt marsh moth. They must be common here - we've hatched others in previous years

Luna Moths Photograph - Luna Moths Fine Art Print Phil and I first saw these beautiful creatures when we first moved to the country from the city.


Like their cousins the butterflies, moths also go through metamorphosis. Moths spin cocoons while butterflies create a naked chrysalis. The cocoon is a more sheltered, outer covering.

Battus philenor (Pipevine Swallowtail or Blue Swallowtail) is a swallowtail butterfly found in North America and Central America. The butterflies are black with iridescent blue hind wings.
