The Soviet denouncement of Anna Akhmatova (1946): "Anna Akhmatova is one of the representatives of a reactionary literary quagmire devoid of ideas. . . . The range of her poetry is pitifully limited. This is the poetry of a feral lady from the salons, moving between the boudoir and the prayer stool. It is based on erotic motifs of mourning, melancholy, death, mysticism, and isolation. . .. both nun and whore." And this is about one of the 20th century's greatest poets.

Anna Gorenko, better known as Anna Akhmatova, was one of the greatest Russian poets of the XX century, writer, literary critic and translator.

Anna Akhmatova (1889-1966)

Anna Akhmatova quotes - I go forth to seek — To seek and claim the lovely magic garden Where grasses softly sigh and Muses speak.

Ахматова

The souls of all my dears have flown to the stars. Thank God there’s no one left for me to lose – so I am free to cry. This air was made for the echoing of songs.

Анна Ахматова

Anna Akhmatova was a Russian poet who refused to write communist propaganda for Stalin and instead wrote about the suffering she saw her people endure under communism. Her poetry was condemned as traitorous and her friends and family.
