Final letter from Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria to his wife, Princess Stephanie of Belgium, before the Mayerling Incident in 1889 claimed the lives of both Rudolf and his mistress, Marie Vetsera. The death of the Crown Prince --and only son of Franz Josef I--placed Franz Ferdinand, who's later assassination sparked WWI, as heir to the throne. To this day, it is unclear whether the deaths of Rudolf and Vetsera were the result of a suicide pact as forbidden lovers, or they were assassinated.
