Edvard Munch (1863-1944) was een Noorse kunstschilder. Confrontaties met ziekte en dood lieten in hem de hartstocht voor de kunst ontwaken. De angst voor het verlies van zijn naasten bleef de jonge kunstenaar jaren achtervolgen. Deze geestelijke onrust had hij gemeen met Van Gogh, hoewel hij minder van de natuur uitgaat dan van het psychische.
