Sidney Advertising Clock ~ The bottom section of the Sidney clock has three revolving cylinders, each with four curved slots that hold advertising cards. Every 15 minutes a bell rings and the cards rotate one quarter turn, displaying a new ad.
Edward Pyson Baird was an entrepreneur, inventor and manufacturer of advertising clocks and telephone equipment. In 1881 he formed the Baird Mfg. Co. and built wooden clock cases that housed Seth Thomas movements and were fitted with paper mache doors with advertising for products sold by his client’s. His business model was successful and in 1890, he moved to Plattsburgh, New York and in 1897 expanded to Chicago where he won multiple patents. His clocks remain very collectable.
