‘Faust in his Study’ (1652) by Rembrandt van Rijn (1606/7-1669). Etch, drypoint and burin on Oriental paper. 212 x 162 mm. Although titled ‘Faust’, this print does not accord with any passage in Marlowe’s ‘Dr Faustus’. It shows an elderly scholar in his study, transfixed by the apparition of a blazing disc of light enclosing a series of letters. The scene may represent an alchemist, but does not correspond with traditional representations of the subject. www.ritmanlibrary.com
