Cindy Sherman began photographing herself in costume in 1977. Although she was the model in her photographs, her pictures were not self-portraits. They documented imaginary narratives that explored cliches and the stereotypical roles played by women. She completed a series of 69 of these photographs in 1980. Known as Untitled Film Stills, the series was acquired by the Museum of Modern Art. In 1985 she began drawing on fairy tale subjects & then on figures from the history of art.
