Coastal and Islander Veela often adapt to their environments by incorporating the local flora and fauna into their traditions and culture.

The artist here is Dawn Wain. The use of such natural, unaltered things is what drew me to this piece. The shells did not necessarily have to be altered in any way in order to get this necklace to function, giving this piece a raw, uncut essence.

Amulet necklace from northern Afghanistan, ca. 1950-1975. Partly gilt silver and lapis lazuli. Featuring both Kazakh and Kuchi style elements. Length of the chain: 42cm; the pendant/box is 4 cm wide and can be opened. (Inv.n° müç190 - Kavak Costume Collection, Antwerpen/Belgium).
