This train uses its 'power lines' to give the trains power to run. It is a lot more efficient than steam engines because those are usually manually 'recharged' and require extra luggage (the charcoal powers the train and is placed near the front).

220MPH High Speed Rail concept.  Th idea is that the difficulty with high speed rail is the speeding up and and slowing down.  This concept uses trolleys that do all the stopping, starting a pulling into stations.  Passengers climb into the trolleys, the trolleys then match the speed of the passing train.  When they're side by side, the HSR doors open and admit passengers almost like a runner passing a baton.  Makes sense to me.  Screencap00198
