The River Styx supposedly separated the world of the living from the world of the dead. The deal was you had to cross the River Styx to reach life after death. There were many myths about the perils of crossing the River Styx. Unless they were punished by one of the gods to spend eternity in the underworld, no one expected to hang very long, only long enough to be reborn. So there was no sense in packing anything except a coin to pay for the ferry ride across the River Styx.
