A traditional festive costume from Pomak villages near Biga (Çanakkale prov.), mid-20th c. This is the way a betrothed girl (‘nişanlı kız’) would wear the costume. Characteristics: 1) the tip of the ‘arkalık kuşak’ (triangular waist cloth) is worn on the hip; 2) the hat & imitation hair (black cotton plaits, attached to back of the hat) are covered by the headscarf. Two ‘bel bağı’ (waistband) from the Alevi Türkmen village of Nebiköy (near Tokat).  Beadwork, purchased (in the village) in 1989.  The upper one is incomplete: a ‘bel bağı’ should have 12 tassels, symbolizing the Alevi belief in the 12th imam, an ultimate savior of humankind who will emerge with Isa (Jesus Christ) and fulfill their mission of bringing peace and justice to the world.  (Inv.nr. bon015&016 - Kavak Costume Collection-Antwerpen/Belgium).
