My good friend Françoise brought me eight pupes of the Death's head haw.

The Death's Head Hawk Moth (Acherontia Atropos). It has a fearful reputation that is not becoming of it. The name comes from the skull shape on its back and the bold colouration is to help it enter bee hives undetected. It squeaks when poked.
