Rashaida (Eritrean Arab), 1984. Nat Geo November 1984: Africa adorned. | "From the age of 5 every Rashaida girl wears the burqa, even at meal times, removing it only in the privacy of the family tent. Girls frequently sew small gifts of silver thread, buttons and pendants onto their veils to enhance their exotic appearance. The burqa is usually (restyled?) every 3 yrs, and by the time girls are eligible for marriage it will be impressively long and decorative."
