Messina | One of the few churches to have survived the terrible earthquake of 1908 and the aerial bombardment of the city in 1943 is the Chiesa Annunziata dei Catalani. Originally built by the Normans, it was remodelled during the 13th century. The external decoration of the apse and transepts, which shows a strong Arab influence, is quite remarkable.

Messina | Messina's 12th century Norman Cathedral (Duomo) has had to be almost entirely reconstructed due both to the 1908 earthquake and 1943 aerial bombardment. The lower part of the Romanesque facade, however, is mostly original. The campanile houses what is said to be the largest astronomical clock in the world, built in Strasbourg in 1933.
