Ulysses S. Grant and his favored 17 hh Thoroughbred, "Cincinnati" in 1885. "Cincinnati" was with General Grant throughout the war and was the horse that Grant rode to negotiate Lee’s surrender at Appomattox.  Grant excelled in horsemanship at West Point. Grant owned many horses in his lifetime, including one named Jeff Davis, so named because he acquired it during his Vicksburg Campaign from Jefferson Davis’s Mississippi plantation.
