In 1984, Josef Fritzel locked his daughter Elisabeth, 18, into the secret cellar he had built in the basement. Family was told she ran away. He kept Elisabeth hidden for 24 years, during which she gave birth to 7 children, one died at 3 days old. 3 of the children were raised by her parents, Josef claiming Elisabeth dropped them on the doorstep. Josef confessed to his crimes when one of the cellar children, age 19, had to be hospitalized. He was found guilty and given a life sentence.
