During the overnight hours between March 2 and 3, 1944, a freight train, carrying between 500-600 passengers trying to survive off the 'black market' during World War II, was forced to stop in Balvano, Italy to wait on another train stuck on the tracks. Most of the cars were inside a mountain tunnel slowly being filled with carbon monoxide gas from old used coal. By the time the train was able to move, nearly 450 passengers has silently suffocated from the fumes. Cars, Railroad Tracks, Railroad, Coal, Tunnel, Mountain, Gas, Carbon, Disasters
