Created to fight outside mainland France, the Foreign Legion was stationed in Algeria. After the Algerian War of Independence (1954–62), the morale of the Foreign Legion was at an all-time low; it had lost its traditional and spiritual home (Algeria), elite units had been disbanded, and in addition, many officers and men were arrested or deserted to escape prosecution.
