Three times, during 1961, 1973 and 1975, the hill was leveled, the crosses were burned or turned into scrap metal, and the area was covered with waste and sewage. Chiune Sugihara. This man saved 6000 Jews. He was a Japanese diplomat in Lithuania. When the Nazis began rounding up Jews, Sugihara risked his life to start issuing unlawful travel visas to Jews. He hand-wrote them 18 hrs a day. The day his consulate closed and he had to evacuate, witnesses claim he was STILL writing visas and throwing from the train as he pulled away. He saved 6000 lives.

Karl Plagge (Darmstadt, German Empire, 10 July 1897- Darmstadt, West Germany, 19 June 1957) was a Major engineer & a Nazi Party member. During WWII, Plagge used his position as officer in the German Army to protect some 1,240 Jewish men, women & children in order to give them a chance to survive the extermination of Lituania's Jews between 1941-1944. In 2005 the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial, posthumously, awarded Plagge the title of Righteous Among the Nations. A hero of that dark period!
