Per ricordare le battaglie delle donne per i loro diritti il Convegno internazionale socialista di Copenhagen del 1910 decise di istituire una giornata internazionale: questa fu fissata l’8 marzo in ricordo della tragedia avvenuta nel 1911 in una fabbrica di camicie di Manhattan a New York, dove lavoravano circa 200 ragazze, e dove un incendio provocò 148 vittime.
