The highest mountain in the Dolomite range of the Alps at 3342 mtrs, the Marmolada Massif, became a major battlefield of the Italian Front in WW1. Marmolada had all characteristics and dangers unique to high mountain warfare including the thin atmosphere, ice, snow and scree, and frequent blizzards or dense fog banks covering attacks. Avalanches, falling rock and lightening, long range shooting duels, artillery , exposure to extreme low temperatures, high winds, killed men in equal numbers.
