The Duchess of Richmond's Ball: June 15, 1815: Given as an entertainment for the officers of the Duke of Wellington's army in Brussels, it went well, until Wellington received the news that the French forces had unexpectedly begun their march. Some officers immediately left the ball, while others stayed so long that they ended up fighting in their evening clothes. The Anglo-Dutch army was on its way to fight the French at the Battle of Quatre Bras, the first step towards Waterloo.

Napoleon reviewing a Cuirassier Regiment on the morning of Waterloo. The soldiers' enthusiasm and cries of "Vive l'empereur" bolstered morale and served to intimidate the Anglo-Dutch troops, not two miles away. Torrential rain had turned the soil soggy, making the effective deployment of artillery impossible, which is why Napoleon decided to wait until ca. 11:30 and the ground had sufficiently hardened. Had he known the Prussians were already underway he might not have wasted valuable time
