I think the American culture has been greatly separated from the rest of the world. We as a people live with so much ease that are understanding of hardships in the rest of the world is highly filtered. So much how we retell history or world events would change if we experienced or grew up in a different culture. I think Americans are highly sheltered people. We protect that lifestyle at what seems to be any cost.
