German heraldic crest for a tournament Great helm, Zimier, in 14th-15th c. style. Made as Swan's head, of gesso & coarse fibre, prob. jute, over sculpted leather core,hollow  for fitting the crown of the helmet skull, with lace-holes on sides, painted white and grey, the base and the beak with traces of gilding over a red base coat, and in "aged " condition throughout.. Crests of this type were worn in the 15th & early 16th c. w/ tournament Armour.
