Abbey of la Madeleine, Vézelay ~

UNESCO: Vézelay, Church and Hill Date of Inscription: 1979 Criteria: (i)(vi)

Unit 2 Romanesque-This shows the diaphragm arches that were popular in the Romanesque time period. We can also see the groin vaulting of the ceiling and the smaller columns which are representative of the era. I love the monotone color and simple features of this church. Beautiful!

ERHEEN With its sculpted capitals and portal, the Madeleine of Vézelay – a monastic church – is a masterpiece of Burgundian Romanesque art and architecture.

Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi. One of my most favorite places on earth. There are a lot of blues and greens in the murals in both the knave (here) and the lower basilica.

Cathedral in Assisi (St Francis) It is wonderful. I wish I would have had more time than 1 hour. Of all the religious sights in Italy this whole place was the most moving hands down. Full of the Holy Spirit.

On the hill at Vezelay, France, the church came to prominence in the mid 11th century when belief spread that it held the relics of St Mary Magdalene.
