Le Nostre Esposizioni. Giacomo Favretto (Italian, 1849-1887). Oil on panel. At first glance Favretto’s masterfully observed painting is no more than a gently satirical take on the then prevalent taste for small pictures and ornate, oversized gilt frames. The viewing public is visually challenged by the diminutive sizes of the works. Favretto’s irony is also directed at the viewing public, caricatures that hardly come across as serious connoisseurs of art.
