Lowtide at Hartland Quay

South West Coast Path above Hartland Quay

The South West Coast path circles the entire peninsula.

The rugged and wild Hartland Peninsula is a beautiful place to walk at any time of year. Winter is best when the great Atlantic Rollers crash onto the rocks. The beaches are mainly pebbles with great rock pools and many lumps of rusting iron - a legacy of centuries of ship wrecks on these shores. Visit on a stormy day and then enjoy lunch in the Hartland Quay Inn or The Old Smithy in Welcombe. Drive time from Barnfield holiday cottage: 50mins. http://www.barnfieldholidaycottage.co.uk

HARTLAND QUAY by & copyright Richard Brookes. The rugged beauty of Hartland Quay holds a fascination. Situated on a peninsula where the full might of the Atlantic Ocean meets the more sheltered waters of the Bristol Channel in North Devon. The ancient chevron folded and faulted rocks change with the light, weather and temperament of the sea. Every visit is different. Man has battled for centuries with the elements here. There was an historic quay but it was washed away in storms long ago.
