Homo sapiens Evolved in Africa, now worldwide About 200,000 years ago to present Fossils and DNA confirm humans are one of more than 200 species belonging to primates. Although we did not evolve from any of the apes living today, we share characteristics with chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans (the great apes), as well as other apes. We most likely evolved from Homo heidelbergensis, the common ancestor we share with Neanderthals, who are our closest extinct relatives.

The so-called Man of Altamura, whole and intact skeleton of an adult male of Homo neanderthalensis found embedded in limestone concretions of a cave in the countryside in Altamura, Italy. Perhaps the man, who lived in a period between 50,000 and 65,000 years ago, accidentally fell through a sinkhole in the karst cave and died of his wounds or broken bones.

Humanity's forgotten return to Africa revealed in DNA

Humanity's forgotten return to Africa revealed in DNA. Now a study of southern African genes shows that, unexpectedly, another migration took western Eurasian DNA back to the very southern tip of the continent 3000 years ago.
