The Art of the Book - Gothic illuminated pages from the 14th century Jesus Christ

The Seige of Tyre as illustrated in a medieval illuminated manuscript - Miniature from ‘Romanzo di Alessandro’ - MS.

This illuminated Book of Hours was produced in the second quarter of the fifteenth century. It is written in the Netherlandish translation of Geert Grote. Although lacking in full-page miniatures, the manuscript contains eighteen historiated initials by the Masters of Zweder van Culemborg with ornamental initials and decoration throughout.

jothelibrarian:  Pretty medieval manuscript of the day is a fifteenth century psalter from the special collections department of the University of St Andrews, in Scotland. It’s a real pleasure to feature a book from my alma mater, although I don’t recall ever seeing any illuminated manuscripts when I volunteered there. Charters a plenty, and some fab printed books, but nothing like this. I think it’s a gorgeous photo, and the high resolution means it’s easy to have a good look at the text…

Left side of a double-page illuminated frontispiece from the Walters manuscript (W.559) is comprised of two rectangles surrounded by a trefoil border in grisaille. The inner border is gold strapwork with blue squares. The central area is an intricate design of geometric forms and arabesques in blue, black, gold, and green. Inscribed by Mubarakshah ibn Qutb in AD1323, Ilkhanid, Iran.

Ormesby Psalter, Manuscript Douce 366. DATE: 1310. Provenance East Anglia.    I believe this now lies in the Oxford Bodleian Library (Douce is a Bod. title). Manuscript has a number (11 pages) of beautiful historiated initial letters as seen in the sample image.    A fine sample of Brown's "Gothic bookhand, England".

The Oldest Sephardic Haggadah (Circa 1350)  ~ Considered the most beautiful Jewish illuminated manuscript in existence, and the oldest Sephardic Haggadah, the Sarajevo Haggadah, was produced in the mid-14th century in Barcelona, Spain. It was written on bleached calfskin and illuminated in copper and gold, and opens with 34 pages of illustrations of biblical scenes from creation through the death of Moses.  It is preserved at the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina  in Sarajevo.

SEFARAD / Jewish Spain - Considered the most beautiful Jewish illuminated manuscript in existence, and the oldest Sephardic Haggadah, the Sarajevo Haggadah, was produced in Barcelona, Spain.
