Gebirgsjäger of the 2nd Mountain Division, Franz Roth, resting on the Kola Peninsula
A German Jäger (roughly 'ranger') during WW2. In late 1941, certain "light divisions" (leichte Divisionen) were raised and deployed to fight in rough terrain, especially in southern Europe. In 1942 the light and light infantry divisions were renamed Jäger divisions. Note the trooper's magazine pouch to carry magazines of the MP40 SMG, a weapon of choice for these "rangers."
