This is an ancient Roman intaglio of Minerva, dating to the 1st century A.D. The gem is cut on an emerald green chalcedony, that would have been considered an emerald during the 1st century. The gem has an old collection label on the reserve, is of good shape and has a nicely cut details. Minerva is shown here in her classic pose, holding victory in one hand, with a shield, spear and helmeted. The gem is in excellent excavated condition, suitable for remounting into a gold finger ring today.

The ‘Seal of Nero’ is an intricately carved intaglio. Made in Rome by a gem cutter called Dioskourides at some point during Augustus’ reign (27BC – 14AD), the seal features a dramatic scene in the mythological tale of the musical challenge between the god Apollos and the satyr Marsyas. Apollos stands over the bound figure of Marsyas, as Olympus kneels in supplication on behalf of his defeated teacher. Lorenzo the magnificent came to own it in 1487. He inscribed his mark: LAUMED.

This is a rare ancient Roman magical gem intaglio, dating to the 2nd - 3rd century A.D. The main device is of a square divided into four, each point having a star. Inside we see the heads of Jupiter, Mercury, a scorpion and an eagle or raven. It has been suggested this is a representation of the seasons, but I feel it is more of a magical gem associated with the mystery religions. It is certainly very interesting and important little gemstone.
