Flattop Mountain is appropriately named as it sports a very broad back when approached from the east, and when you get to the top, you really don’t feel like your on top of a mountain. The “Dragon’s Tale” formation pictured here is the prominent feature visible from Tyndall Gorge. It’s always funny when you tell someone new to the park: “That’s Flattop Mountain”, from this vantage point. Typically they look at you like your feeding them some pretty nasty cow pie, or wonder where they can get some of the stuff the name giver was smoking. By the way, if you’ve never been to the top of Flattop Mountain, and ventured out on the Continental Divide in the vicinity...go, it’s one of my favorite spots on earth.
