Mary Delany botanical collage: Eryngium Amethystinum, 1781, Mary Delany (1700-1788) made her first collages depicting plant specimens at 71, creating 1,000 extraordinarily detailed images by hand coloring, cutting, and gluing paper particles on a black ground. Her works (now in the British Museum) were accurate enough to be used as botanical reference tools in the pre-photography era.
