General Erwin Vierow, winner of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross, was appointed on July 1, 1943 commander of the German army in northwest France. He held this command until September 1944 when he was appointed chief of the ad hoc ‘General Command Somme’. He held this post until he was captured by the British and was transferred to POW camp in Mississippi, United States.He was eventually returned to Germany where he died at the age of 91 in 1982.
