"it needs an audience." It's interesting because I'm sure Sherlock felt like he needed an audience.  He probably tried to get Scotland Yard--Lestrade, Donovan, and Anderson--to be his audience but they refused and in Donovan's and Anderson's cases, they hated him and called him a freak.  And so Sherlock gave up the idea that he needed an audience.  He would be his own audience.  So he certainly wasn't expecting or hoping for an audience when he met John Watson.
