The extraordinarily diverse collections in Asian and African Studies constitute one of the world’s finest resources for the study of Asia, the Middle East and Africa.

The Oracle Bone Script, called 'Jiaguwen' (in Chinese), is the 1st relatively complete character system laying the foundations for the development of the later Chinese characters, which have undergone several stages respectively marked by Jin-wen (Bronze Script), Xiaozhuan (Lesser Seal Character), Li-shu (Clerical Script), Cao-shu (running script), and Kai-shu (Regular Script) that gradually evolved into simplified characters we use as standard form today.

It is Oracle bone inscription (Chinese: 甲骨文; As the earliest Chinese writing scripts, Oracle bone inscriptions are the ancient Chinese characters carved on tortoise shells and animal scapulae.

A Chinese scholar and government official named Wang Yirong is credited with realizing that some of these bones were inscribed with ancient writing and thus had historical significance.  Today, they are called “oracle bones” and they constitute the best window available into the history, language and culture of ancient China.  Because they involve specific dates, they are also an indispensible means of exploring the ancient Chinese calendar and its astronomical underpinnings

甲骨文。 Oracle bone scripts are the incised ancient Chinese characters found on oracle bones, which were animal bones or turtle shells used in divination in Bronze Age China. The vast majority record the pyromantic divinations of the royal house of the late Shang dynasty at the capital of Yin; dating of the Anyang examples of oracle bone script varies from ca. 14th–11th centuries  to c. 1200–1050. Very few oracle bone writings date to the beginning of the subsequent Zhou dynasty.
