Afternoon tea was invented by Anna Duchess of Bedford (1783-1857), one of Queen Victoria’s ladies-in-waiting. At the time, the noble classes ate large breakfasts, small lunches & late suppers. Every afternoon, Anna reportedly experienced a “sinking feeling,” & so requested tea & petite-sized cakes to be served. Many followed the Duchess’ lead, & the ritual of afternoon tea was born.
